If only…

I said that this summer after some tragic ending to some missions.

If only they had been in my REI class the outcome would have been different“.

And while it is easy to armchair quarterback the decisions others make, it doesn’t discount the truth. Wilderness emergencies can be prevented or managed by having the right mindset, skills, and gear. I pack 25+ years of stories and experience into my REI classes and we work hands on skills that can keep you alive. This year, we are also handing out my favorite emergency shelter and firestarters, having some of Team BUSAR visit, and donating some of the class fee to the team.

I am getting geared up to start teaching again at regional REI’s. I will be hitting Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Brentwood. Future dates will be posted on the calendar and class page.

These classes tend to reach capacity rather quickly, so keep checking back to see when one is coming to your area.

First up is Knoxville on Wednesday January 30th. Info here

WEMR at Tremont…

WEMR2

The great instructors over at Roane State are teaching a Wilderness Emergency Responder, formerly known as “Wilderness First Responder”, class over at Tremont in January.

I preach that good survival skills, medical skills, and land nav skills prepare you for 99% of wilderness emergencies. The only person responsible for your safety in the wilderness is yourself. A WEMR class is a great step in that direction.

Team BUSAR at Three Rivers Market…

Kato

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I wrote a this post about a great place called Three Rivers Market. Before we moved deeper into the mountains of North Carolina, we were members there and enjoyed their locally farmed produce and bulk foods. Every couple months, I still buy my 50 pound bag of organic rolled oats there.

For the month of June, our team is honored to be the recipient of the Nourishing Change Grant. Basically, anytime you or another customer makes a purchase, you can round up your change and/or donate extra to the team. This money has already been earmarked to buy our team swiftwater rescue gear for operations in Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

On Saturday, June 9th at 1:30 pm, our team will also be on site doing Preventative – Search & Rescue demos targeting kids, but there will be good stuff for adults too.

So come visit us, meet some team members, and pet Kato the Magnificent..

By rounding up your change, or donating, you are become part of the rescue!
