National Park Rangers at Point Reyes National Seashore initiated a missing person search when they noticed a vehicle parked south of Pierce Point Ranch parking lot over two days beginning on January 1, 2016. After contacting family of the registered owner of the vehicle, a search was initiated on January 2 in the afternoon. By the next day, the search swelled to nearly 100 individuals from Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Marin County Fire, California Highway Patrolhelicopter, US Coast Guard helicopter, Sonoma County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Contra Costa County Sheriff Search and Rescue, San Mateo Sheriff Search and Rescue and California Rescue Dog Association.

After searching most of the morning on January 3, a body was discovered around 11 am north of Kehoe Beach. The Marin County Coroner’s Office has identified the body as 62 year-old John Son of San Jose, CA. Cause and manner of death are pending autopsy and toxicology results.

Hiker Dies At Ribbon Falls On North Kaibab Trail

Early on the afternoon of Thursday, February 12th, park dispatch received a broken 911 call reporting the discovery of a man’s body in the vicinity of Ribbon Falls near the North Kaibab Trail.  Ranger medics responded by helicopter.

The victim was found to be a 73-year-old man who was day hiking from Phantom Ranch to Ribbon Falls with several companions.  He’d collapsed shortly after reaching the falls. Bystanders began CPR while another visitor hiked to a place on the trail where limited cell service was available.

When park medics arrived, the man had been down for about 90 minutes. They pronounced him dead.

The man’s body and his companions were flown to the South Rim. The body was then transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Flagstaff.

Search For Missing Man Scaled Back

The search for a missing 21-year-old Texas man has been scaled back due to a lack of clues as to his whereabouts.

Drake Kramer, 21, was last seen near Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim on Sunday, February 1st. He was reported as missing by members of his family on Monday. A six-day search for him ensued, but failed to turn up any evidence as to where he might be.

Rangers searched the South Rim developed area from Hermit’s Rest on the west side to Grandview on the east. Teams of searchers walked miles along the canyon rim, searched heavily forested areas, utilized dog teams, performed several over-the-rim technical searches, and conducted multiple aerial reconnaissance missions to support ground searchers.

With no additional clues to guide search efforts on land, the search will be scaled back to a continuous but limited mode in which rangers and pilots will continue to search for clues when in the area. Flyers with Kramer’s picture and description also remain posted at various South Rim locations. Anyone who may have information regarding his whereabouts is encouraged to call the National Park Service Silent Witness Line at 928-638-7840.

A photo of Kramer may be found on a previous park news release at this link:http://www.nps.gov/grca/parknews/expand-kramer-search.htm .

Search For Missing Snowshoer Comes To Tragic Conclusion

The search for a 37-year-old local man who was overdue from a snowshoeing trip in the park came to a tragic conclusion on December 29th when ground crews located his body next to Edith Creek in the Paradise area, not far from the point last seen.

The man went missing on the evening of December 27th during a winter storm that dropped 20 inches of snow in 48 hours. He intended to overnight at Camp Muir, but only made it as far as Panorama Point due to formidable winter storm conditions.

A party of two waiting out the storm at Panorama Point took him into their shelter, but when the shelter was destroyed by the extreme conditions they attempted to complete their descent to Paradise together. During the descent, the man became separated from his companions in the vicinity of Edith Creek.

A hasty search was conducted on December 28th, with members of the Nordic Patrol scouring main routes in the area. Operations expanded on December 29th to include air and ground searches from Edith Creek to the upper Stevens Canyon drainage.

Members of Tacoma, Everett, Seattle, and Olympic Mountain Rescues participated in the ground search. A Chinook from the US Army Reserve’s 214th Air Division, Joint Base Lewis McChord, with park climbing rangers aboard searched by air. Approximately 30 NPS and partner personnel were assigned to the incident. David Keltner was incident commander.

Olympic National Park (WA)
Major Search In Progress For Missing Day Hiker

Yesterday marked the fifth day of an ongoing interagency search for a 60-year-old Port Angeles man who failed to return from a day hike he took in the park last Monday.

Searchers from the park, Olympic Mountain Rescue, Tacoma Mountain Rescue, Clallam County SAR, Jefferson County SAR, and two dog teams from German Shepherd’s Search Dogs continued to search the Olympic Hot Springs area over the weekend.

Jim Griffin, who frequently hikes the two-and-a-half-mile trail to the hot springs, went for a day hike there on Monday, December 22nd. On Wednesday, December 24th, around 10:00 p.m., friends reported Griffin overdue when he did not show up for Christmas Eve dinner.

Three NPS searchers began the search that evening and continued through the night. On Christmas Day, two two-person teams searched for Griffin. Several friends of Griffins, including the reporting party, assisted in the efforts on both Thursday and Friday.

On the afternoon of Christmas Day, Griffin’s day pack was located 50 feet off trail about a half mile from the trailhead. On Friday, eight search groups, including three dog teams, searched until dark. The park also attempted to use Griffin’s dog in the search, but the dog was not able to indicate where Griffin might be.

On Saturday, 21 searchers and two dogs resumed the effort to find him. The search teams completed a grid search within 500 feet of the location where Griffin’s day pack was found. They covered the entire search area in a grid pattern about ten feet apart, but no clues were found.

Park incident team members spoke to a couple on Saturday who had a conversation with Griffin at the hot springs. They believe he left the springs around 4:00 p.m. on Monday, which would mean he hiked back in the dark.

On Sunday, three teams were in the field and were joined by a group of Griffins’ friends. No sign of him was found. The search will be suspended today, but the investigation will continue.

Anyone who was at the Olympic Hot Springs, on the trail, or at the parking lot last Monday is asked to contact park dispatch at 360-565-3115. Even the smallest piece of information might help in the search.

I pulled this story out, not only because it is a good read, but because the following statement is false

“If you don’t have a way to keep the lighter dry, once the flint is wet, it’s not going to work,” said Armstrong. –  http://www.nelsonstar.com/news/285726061.html

A lighter is a valuable tool and has limitations, but with the right knowledge and skills they can be overcome. After spending the night in 28 degree weather with only a sheet of plastic, Carol (and her lighter) soaked in 40 degree water for almost 10 bone chilling minutes. Once she emerged into the 38 degree weather with 10 mph winds, she built a fire with only natural tinder and her wet lighter.

Methodical, trained, and now skilled..

Man vs. Bear – Your chances of getting attacked by a dog are exponentially higher than being attacked by a black bear, but knowing what to do is good info to have on board. I always tell people that if they knew how tough they were, hikers would get eaten all the time. A 200 pound animal that can climb a 100 foot beech tree like a squirrel has some serious power. Fortunately they don’t realize how soft and chewy we are and so it comes down to a dominance issue.

The following story has good points. Injury led to the attack on the hunter, but the hunter survived because he took the fight to the bear. This is key. If you act like prey, you will be. Prey doesn’t fight back. I have punched a bear in the face that tried to come in my tent  and “Rambo” Ricky, the badass you see carrying the tranquilized bear, has kicked several in the face with his logging boots.

Whether it is a bear in your camp or an intruder in your house, when it is time to fight, don’t be prey!!

Mount Rainier National Park (WA)
Injured Hiker Rescued At Panorama Point

Late on the afternoon of December 2nd, a  911 call was patched through to Mount Rainier dispatch from an injured 61-year-old hiker who had broken his lower leg in a fall. He slipped on a steep icy slope and fell 50 feet just above Panorama Point, coming to rest after hitting a rock hard enough to result in a compound fracture of both lower leg bones of one leg.

A group of skiers descending from Camp Muir fortuitously came upon the accident site and the injured hiker. The group was better prepared than the great majority of backcountry travelers and was able to radio park rangers with the GPS coordinates and other pertinent information.  They then went to great lengths to protect, rewarm and care for the man for several hours of cold and windy conditions while rescuers were summoned to the park to perform a carryout.

Teams from Tacoma Mountain Rescue, Seattle Mountain Rescue and Olympic Mountain Rescue were battered by high winds as they performed the late night evacuation by rescue litter. The operation included several steep-angle technical roped lowerings down the icy slopes of Panorama Point.

Rescue efforts continued into the wee hours of the morning.  The injured hiker was then transported by ambulance to the hospital.
