If only…

I said that this summer after some tragic ending to some missions.

If only they had been in my REI class the outcome would have been different“.

And while it is easy to armchair quarterback the decisions others make, it doesn’t discount the truth. Wilderness emergencies can be prevented or managed by having the right mindset, skills, and gear. I pack 25+ years of stories and experience into my REI classes and we work hands on skills that can keep you alive. This year, we are also handing out my favorite emergency shelter and firestarters, having some of Team BUSAR visit, and donating some of the class fee to the team.

I am getting geared up to start teaching again at regional REI’s. I will be hitting Knoxville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Brentwood. Future dates will be posted on the calendar and class page.

These classes tend to reach capacity rather quickly, so keep checking back to see when one is coming to your area.

First up is Knoxville on Wednesday January 30th. Info here

Climbing –

Late yesterday, November 8, Rocky Mountain National Park rangers were notified by cell phone from a man indicating that he and his 13-year-old son needed assistance.  They had summited Longs Peak via the Keyhole Route. They attempted to come down from the summit via Clark’s Arrow.  The two got off route descending from The Loft between Longs Peak and Mount Meeker.

Rocky Mountain National Park Search and Rescue members reached them at 10:40 p.m.  After assessing their condition and evacuation options, they assisted the two down The Loft reaching a backcountry shelter near Chasm Lake at 2:00 a.m. this morning, where they connected with other members of the park’s Search and Rescue team.  They stayed through the night and all began hiking out this morning.  It is estimated they will reach the Longs Peak Trailhead at 10:30 a.m.

The two are from Loveland, Colorado.  Because one is a juvenile, park staff will not be releasing their names.

Hiking –

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – A hiker was injured by a grizzly bear on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at approximately 5 pm in Glacier National Park. His injuries were not life threatening.

The 65-year male hiker from Wisconsin was hiking alone off- trail near Mt. Henkel in the Many Glacier Valley, where he surprised a sow grizzly with two sub-adult cubs. The hiker was grabbed and shaken by the bear during the encounter. The man successfully deployed his bear spray, causing the bear to release him and leave the area. The hiker received puncture wounds to his lower leg and injuries to his hand.

The man hiked back to his vehicle in Many Glacier and drove himself to the emergency room at the Northern Rockies Medical Center in Cutbank, Montana. He was treated and released later the evening of September 29, and continued on with his travel itinerary. He called Glacier National Park Dispatch to report the incident. Rangers are still investigating the incident.

According to park rangers, the bear’s response to the hiker was defensive in nature and consistent with a surprise encounter with a hiker.

Visitors to Glacier National Park are reminded that the park is home to black and grizzly bears. Bears spend a lot of time eating, so avoid hiking in obvious feeding areas like berry patches, cow parsnip thickets, or fields of glacier lilies. Hikers are highly encouraged to hike in groups, make noise when hiking, and have bear spray accessible and know how to use it. For more information about recreating in bear country, please visithttp://www.nps.gov/glac/naturescience/bears.htm.

At this time of year, bears are entering a phase called hyperphagia. It is a period of concentrated feeding to prepare for hibernation. There has been a shortage of berries in many areas of the park this year, leading to the potential for increased bear activity in visitor use areas. Thus it is especially important that visitors keep campgrounds and developed areas clean and free of food and trash. Regulations require that all edibles, food containers, and cookware be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or food locker when not in use, day or night. Place all trash in bear-proof containers. Do not burn waste in fire rings or leave litter around your camp. Fire rings should be free of trash before vacating a campsite.

Twentynine Palms, CA—Joshua Tree National Park Rescuers located a 21 year old male from Great Britain who had been hiking in the Rattlesnake Canyon area of the park and became separated from the others in his party. Acting on a 911 call Saturday at approximately 6:50 pm, search teams from Joshua Tree National Park Search and Rescue (JOSAR), Desert Search and Rescue (DSAR), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department, responded to a report of a lost hiker.

The subject was located Sunday morning around 8:30 am by search members who were able to fix a position with the hiker using voice contact and direct a San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department helicopter to the site where the man was evacuated. Morongo Basin Ambulance transported the subject to Hi-Desert Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and observation.

Visitors to the park are reminded to always stay with your group when possible and carry more water than you think you will need. Dress appropriately for the environment and use sunscreen.

Yellowstone National Park (ID,MT,WY)
Hiker’s Death Confirmed As Caused By Grizzly Attack

Results from an autopsy conducted on Monday afternoon revealed that Lance Crosby, a 63-year-old Billings man, died as a result of traumatic injuries sustained from a bear attack.

Results from genetic (DNA) analysis of bear hair samples collected next to Crosby’s body confirmed the adult female grizzly bear that was captured at the scene on the night the body was discovered was the bear involved in the fatal attack. Additional evidence that this female was the bear involved in the attack included the following:

  • The bear and cubs were at the attack site when Crosby’s body was found by park rangers
  • Bear tracks of a female with cubs were found at Crosby’s body
  • This bear was captured at the fatality site within 24 hours of the body being found; and
  • Canine puncture wounds inflicted on the victim are consistent with the bite size of the female captured at the site.

Based on the totality of the evidence, this adult female grizzly was the bear involved in the fatality and was euthanized yesterday. An important fact in the decision to euthanize the bear was that a significant portion of the body was consumed and cached with the intent to return for further feeding. Normal defensive attacks by female bears defending their young do not involve consumption of the victim’s body.

Arrangements have been made to transfer the bear’s two cubs to a facility accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The AZA sets strict standards for facilities with regard to animal handling and care. Details of this placement are still being finalized. The facility is expected to make an announcement on Friday.

“As managers of Yellowstone National Park, we balance the preservation of park resources with public safety,” said Superintendent Dan Wenk. “Our decision takes into account the facts of the case, the goals of the bear management program, and the long term viability of the grizzly bear population as a whole, rather than an individual bear.”

The area closures, including the Elephant Back Loop Trail and Natural Bridge Trail will be lifted today.

And now for a 2 year  BigPigBlog anniversary rant..

Surviving a wilderness emergency has been romanticized in our culture to the point there are TV shows and experts recommending primitive and bushcraft skills to people during a wilderness emergency. If you are involved in search and rescue or a reader of Survival Weekly, you will surely see the folly in the following quote:

“McKinley told the class that learning about primitive skills allows a person to not spend their money on gear to survive in the wild, but to take the opportunity to build and create the means of survival by utilizing the natural surroundings”

I am going to give McKinley the benefit of the doubt that the journalist spun the story to be trendy, as readinding the rest of the article, I believe his real intentions are to get people outside and connecting with nature. However, I can’t let that quote slide by without addressing it’s gross negligance.

By definition, a “survival situation” would be life-threatening incident. I would also throw out that they are “unplanned”, as most people try to avoid death.

Native people and mountain men carried cutting edge equipment of their time. It just so happened, that friction fire and flint and steel, was their best technology.

Try carving a friction fire set and starting a fire with a “simulated” broken wrist. Try it while shivering uncontrollaby, or better yet, when your kids are shivering and it’s raining.

Try building a debris hut when everything is soaked, you have thirty minutes until dark, and your family is with you.

Try coal burning a container and rock boiling water when you are dehydrated.

Then try all the same with a lighter, a contractor bag, and water purification pills for your canteen you brought, which all together cost you, maybe $10.

In fifteen years of search & rescue and two years of reporting Survival Weekly, I have yet to see an incident where someone miraculously finds themselves in a survival situation, naked, without some sort of equipment.

I love primitive skills, bushcraft, foraging, hunting and trapping, but I keep it all in context and realize that in most modern scenarios, those skills should not be prioritized over good decision making in regards to planning and gear.

The real lesson from learning primitive skills is when you realize how much time and effort they require and that you wouldn’t want to bet your life or your family’s on them.

Death Valley National Park (CA)
Mother And Child Rescued From Trail In Extreme Heat Conditions

On the afternoon of Monday, August 3rd, rangers received a report that a mother and son were experiencing severe heat exhaustion on the Golden Canyon Trail, a popular hiking route in Death Valley.

The father, now at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center, left his family on the trail and sought help when his wife and son were too exhausted to continue. Rangers responded to the visitor center and learned that the eight-year-old child and 49-year-old mother had just a half liter of water between them when the father left them an hour previously. The father also said that his wife and son had been vomiting and had been on the trail since 9 a.m. The air temperature at the time was 120 F.

Rangers immediately responded and began hiking the trail, carrying copious amounts of water and medical supplies. After roughly thirty minutes of searching, the rangers located the mother and son, who were lying face down in the shade of a cliff face. Both were responsive but were completely out of water.

Rangers administered care to both mother and son, who were stable and denied throwing up. Once they had been cooled, the rangers assisted them in walking out of the canyon. When they arrived at the ambulance, staged at the entrance to the canyon, the mother declined any further medical care for her and her son.

Badlands National Park (SD)
Search For Missing Man Suspended

On Friday, July 31st, rangers suspended the search for 39-year-old Joshua Jacobsen of Lincoln, Nebraska, due to lack of physical evidence.

Jacobsen was reported missing by his family on July 16th. During the week of July 27th, rangers, along with members of the Pennington County search and rescue team, conducted focused operations within the 64,000-acre Sage Creek Wilderness using a cadaver dog team from Estes Park, Colorado.  The South Dakota National Guard also conducted grid searches with a Lakota to follow-up on bones observed during a prior flight.  The bones were later determined to be from a buffalo.

Close to 50 searchers have participated in operations since July 17th and more than 20 flight hours were logged by the South Dakota National Guard.  Rangers are continuing to investigate the case with the FBI and Pennington County Sheriff’s Department.

Joshua Tree National Park (CA)
Hiker Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

A 73-year-old Louisiana woman suffered a fatal heart attack while hiking with family on the 49 Palms Oasis trail on Monday, July 27th.

Park staff, Joshua Tree National Park Search and Rescue, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and members of the Twentynine Palms Fire Department responded and administered CPR, but the woman did not respond.

Two other members of the hiking party were transported by Morongo Basin Ambulance and treated for heat-related issues at Hi Desert Medical Center.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area – NV, AZ
Bodies Of Two People Found In Stuck Minivan

The bodies of a man and woman from Golden Valley, Arizona, were found near Greggs Hideout in Lake Mead National Recreation Area on Sunday, August 2nd.

Park dispatch received a call just before 5 p.m. reporting that bodies of the two people were found in a minivan by a third party who was passing through.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office deputies and National Park Service rangers responded and located the pair in a minivan that was stuck in the dirt on Salt Spring Wash Road. They appeared to have died from environmental exposure. Only two bottles of water were found at the scene and there was no cell phone coverage in the area.

The Mohave County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and confirm the victims’ identities. The incident is under investigation.
